What is Society Registration?
A society refers to a group of people working together not for profits but for the welfare of the general public with an agenda of helping the community has an option of Society registration to gain a legal status. A non-commercial organization with seven or more persons coming together for any scientific, literary or charitable purposes or for purposes as mentioned under section 20 of the Society Registration Act, 1860, may get Society Registration by subscribing their names to a Memorandum of Association and filing the same with the registrar.
There are two types of society, one is for National level, and another one is State Level of society. Minimum of seven people must come together with a common purpose of being formed into society. However in the case of national level society, the members / desirous person must represent seven different states. The process of registering NGO as society differs from state to state. SOCIETY REGISTRATION PROCESS IN INDIA
Step 1: Selection of Name
The first step is to finalize name of the society & Proposed name of the society should be according to Society Act, 1860. The proposed name should not be against the state government or government of India. The president of the proposed society shall be filing an affidavit that the name is not same or similar to any other NGO.
Step 2: Memorandum of Association
Memorandum of Association of Society shall contain the Following:
- Name of Society
- Registered Office of Society
- Functions of Society
- Name, address and other details of the directors, council or other members of the governing body who shall be regulating the management of its affairs.

- Termination of the Members
Step 4: Filing Application for Society Registration
The application for society registration has to be submitted to the prescribed authority of the state, where the registered office of society is situated.
Step 5: PAN,TAN & Bank Account
After registration of the society the next step is to apply for allotment of Pan Number and TAN and thereafter opening of a bank A/c for collection of membership fees, subscription charges or donations as the case may be.
